I'm at the internet cafe just around the corner. This is quite a place. There's probably like 100 computers in two different rooms and they are almost all full, all day with people from all different countries tap tap tapping away. Usually there is techno muzak playing but right now it's top 40. This area that Alia is living and working in is near an exibition center and lots of small B&B's and hostels and a major connecting point for the tube. So theres lots of 'transients'of the tourist sort as well as commuters streaming about.
Did a daytrip to Cambridge today via the Coach, RT 10£. Cobblestone streets and all the ivy league colleges, and lots more stunning churches. The buildings were really incredible, it's hard to take in all this magnificent architecture at times. I tried to frame it in my camera but I couldn't get it all in. I walked and walked all over that town. Lots of students bicylcing,3 speeds with wicker baskets on the narrow windy streets.
Yesterday Alia had the day off so we did a London walking tour. They have all sorts of different ones that change daily but the one we chose was 'secret london.' It was a great 2 hour walk thru the back alleys. Highlights: The church of ST. Audrey. She has another big unpronouncable name but I can't remember it (update: Saint Etheldreda). The British reduced it to Audrey. The story goes that she was a nun and she gave up all her worldly goods but she had a penchant for jewelry especially necklaces. She always wore them under her frock. She just couldn't give them up. Well she got a lump on her throat. She thought this was gods punishment for the necklaces she wore. They did surgery, this was like 679 A. D. and she died. She was buried and many years later for some reason they had to move her grave. When they dug her up, she was perfectly preserved and there was no scar on her neck. So she was made a saint, Saint Audrey and the word TAWDRY came from her love of jewelry which they sold at her shrine after being made a saint; i.e. Audrey souveniers changed to tawdry.
Also, saw a sweet little monumnet to Samuel Johnson's (he wrote the dictionary) cat: Hodge. With the qoute "A fine cat indeed."
Alia and I saw a play last night called:'The Bog of Cats' at the Wyndam Theatre. It had Holly Hunter in it and took place in Ireland. A tragic epic of a tinkerer woman who is scorned by her lover. Ugh...nicely done but one of those ones that leaves you unsettled and weeping.
Okay, tomorrow I'm doing housekeeping...laundry and getting ready for the roadtrip on friday to Liverpool to visit a cousin. We have 4 days planned to travel. After Liverpool we're a little vague about where we're going.......
